A Boat House: the best BnB in the Cape Peninsula

The Cape Peninsula has a lot to offer, starting from the wonderful city of Cape Town, with its colorful neighborhoods, stunning backdrop of Table mountain, the wonderful cape winelands and of course the scintillating coastline. We visited the Cape for our honeymoon a few years back and due to a combination of bad luck and lack of planning time we didn’t get to book any hotels of our choice to stay in Cape Town (had to make do with the Westin). However on our one day road trip around the Cape peninsula we stayed at this wonderful BnB in Simonstown called A Boat House, and till date it is one of my favorite accommodations.

The owners have furnished the BnB like their own home, so it adds a very personal touch to your stay

It is not a fancy place nor luxurious, but has so much character and is run with so much care that it will put a lot of 5 stars to shame. It is situated in the naval town of Simonstown with sweeping views of the naval harbor from all its rooms. We got lucky here and were able to snag the best suite, “The Captains Cabin” for the night, and would highly recommend trying to book it if available.

The nautical theme is pervasive throughout the property, right down to the doors of the suites!

The owners and hosts, Therese and Ludwig, have brought their years of boating and charter experience in the Caribbean and adorned their BnB with souvenirs and stories of their travels.

You wake up to the beautiful harbor outside your room

Our only wish was having more time to stay here and enjoying waking up to the deep blue ocean outside our window. Would have loved to have time to have some more leisurely English breakfasts in the parlor too. And then sitting in the gorgeous living area and enjoying a book or a conversation over a cup of tea and scones. Alas, we only had one night, but we made the most of our stay.

The classy yet homely dining area!

The location is also great, walking distance to Boulders beach, home to the famous penguin colony and just a 30 min drive to Cape Point.

Detailed driving directions are located here.

Costs

Rooms start at 1600 RND (~$100) for the cabin going upto 2200 RND (~$140), so it is excellent value for money for the quality of stay and care you get. The captains cabin is always the top choice and gets booked out way in advance, so make sure you book early!
